Kenan Foundation Asia believes lasting impact happens when people, knowledge, and partnerships work together. Our approach combines global expertise with local understanding to create practical solutions that address complex development challenges across education, workforce development, entrepreneurship, health, and social wellbeing. We recognize that sustainable change cannot be achieved through isolated interventions. Stronger education systems contribute to workforce readiness, technology creates new economic opportunities, and healthier, more inclusive communities enable people to participate fully in society.
Across our work, we collaborate with governments, businesses, educational institutions, communities, and development partners to design programs that respond to local realities while creating long-term systemic change. Rather than focusing only on short-term outputs, we invest in people, institutions, and ecosystems that can continue generating impact long after a project concludes. Practical & Experiential Learning
Kenan believes that people learn most effectively through active participation and real-world application. Our programs emphasize experiential approaches that move beyond traditional knowledge transfer by encouraging learners and beneficiaries to apply ideas, test solutions, and solve practical challenges.
Through project-based learning, inquiry-driven activities, hands-on experiences, and applied problem-solving, participants develop critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and leadership skills while building confidence and adaptability. Whether supporting students, entrepreneurs, educators, or communities, this approach helps individuals translate knowledge into action and prepares them for evolving social and economic environments.
Investing in Change Agents
Kenan strengthens long-term impact by investing in people who can create and sustain change within their own systems and communities. We work with teachers, lecturers, government officers, community leaders, youth leaders, health volunteers, and industry practitioners to build technical knowledge, leadership capacity, and practical skills.
Through Training of Trainers (ToT), mentoring, coaching, Communities of Practice (CoP), and Professional Learning Communities (PLC), we help develop local champions and change agents who can transfer knowledge, support peers, and strengthen institutions over time. This cascading approach extends impact beyond direct beneficiaries and creates sustainable pathways for continuous learning and development.
Mainstreaming Cross-Cutting Themes for Sustainable Impact
Kenan integrates environmental sustainability, digital transformation, and gender equality across our programs to ensure that development outcomes are relevant, inclusive, and sustainable. We increasingly apply a climate lens across our portfolio—whether by incorporating green skills and environmental awareness into education programs, supporting small businesses to adopt more sustainable and resource-efficient practices, or strengthening the resilience of community livelihoods in the face of environmental and economic challenges.
At the same time, we leverage digital tools, technology-enabled learning, data systems, and AI to improve program effectiveness and help individuals and institutions prepare for a rapidly changing economy.
Gender equality and social inclusion are also embedded throughout our work. We design programs to expand opportunities for underserved populations and ensure that women and girls can participate fully and benefit equitably. More than 70% of Kenan’s beneficiaries are women and girls, reflecting both our gender-responsive approach across all programs and our targeted initiatives that advance women’s economic empowerment, leadership, entrepreneurship, and workforce participation.
By mainstreaming these cross-cutting themes across sectors, Kenan helps partners and communities build the skills, systems, and resilience needed to create lasting social and economic impact.
Participatory design and grassroots partnerships
Kenan believes that lasting development impact is achieved when communities are actively involved in shaping the solutions that affect their lives. We place community participation and local voices at the center of our work, using inclusive approaches to understand needs, priorities, challenges, and opportunities from the perspectives of those most directly affected.
Through strong partnerships with local governments, community-based organizations, educational institutions, grassroots networks, and other local stakeholders, we ensure our programs remain relevant, responsive, and grounded in local realities.
These relationships enable us to co-design and implement initiatives that reflect community priorities, strengthen local ownership, and build the capacity of local actors to sustain and scale impact over time. By combining participatory approaches with trusted local partnerships, Kenan helps create solutions that are not only effective in the short term but also contribute to long-term social, economic, and environmental wellbeing.
Strengthening local and national systems
Kenan believes that sustainable development requires strengthening the systems and institutions that shape people’s opportunities and quality of life. Rather than focusing solely on short-term project activities, we work to improve the effectiveness, capacity, and resilience of systems such as education, workforce development, local governance, and community support structures.
Through collaboration with governments, educational institutions, private sector organizations, and civil society, we help develop policies, strengthen institutional capacity, improve coordination among stakeholders, and embed successful approaches into existing structures. We combine research, data, and local insights to inform decision-making and support evidence-based solutions that can be adopted and scaled over time.
As a trusted convenor and implementation partner, Kenan helps build the knowledge, skills, processes, and partnerships needed for institutions to continue delivering benefits long after a project has ended. By strengthening systems rather than creating parallel structures, we contribute to lasting impact at both local and national levels.
